This is a Meiji-period Japanese woodblock print on two joined ōban sheets, forming a diptych, by Toyohara Chikanobu, who signed as Yōshū Chikanobu. It shows court ladies of the Tokugawa shogunate beside a hanaguruma (flower cart) heaped with a lavish arrangement of peonies, chrysanthemums, iris, maple, and weeping cherry, tied with a red cord. At left, a lady in a blue kimono kneels holding the pull-cord. At right, a lady in a black uchikake (outer robe) patterned with plum, pine, and bamboo over a vermilion robe stands with an attendant in red. Their costumes are richly detailed, and there is a faint blind-printed pattern in the background. The series title 徳川時代貴婦人之図 is at upper left. It is signed 楊洲周延 (Yōshū Chikanobu) at right. The print is presented full-sheet under glass in a black frame with a gold liner. Framed size: 24" x 19" (frame dimensions).
