This vibrant modernist street scene from Nigeria shows two stylized figures riding a scooter, the driver gripping the handlebars and a passenger perched behind. They're rendered in bold, cubist-inspired color blocks of cobalt, violet, crimson, ochre, and burnt orange, each outlined in heavy black against a deep blue city backdrop. The subject reflects the motorbike taxis and shared rides that are a familiar part of everyday transportation in Nigeria. The work is titled in pencil at lower left as "Nigeria Boarder System of Transportation," and signed, dated, and located at lower right as "Niyi Ogundele 94, Osogbo." Osogbo became a center of artistic activity in the 1960s after the founding of the Mbari Mbayo club, and the movement that grew there, blending European techniques with Yoruba culture, became known as the Osogbo School of Art. The work is presented under glass in a gilt frame with a gold outer mat and black and cream inner mats. Please see photos for condition. Framed size: 25" x 30" (frame dimensions).
