An elegant engraving by renowned French artist Eduard Jules Chimot depicting two classical male nude figures in conversation. The composition shows one youth partially draped in flowing fabric standing in profile on the left, while the second figure stands fully nude with a spear or staff, his arm raised in a gesture of declaration or emphasis. Chimot demonstrates exceptional draftsmanship in this carefully rendered study, with masterful attention to anatomical detail and graceful contours enhanced by subtle shading. The setting suggests a classical Greek or Roman theme, with a tiled floor and distant landscape visible through an implied opening. This refined work exemplifies Chimot's sophisticated style and his significant contribution to early 20th century printmaking and book illustration. Chimot (1880-1945) was particularly noted for his erotic illustrations and artistic direction of the prestigious Devambez publishing house in Paris. The piece is professionally framed, measuring 19.75"x22" overall. A fine example of classical figure studies executed with technical precision and artistic sensitivity, appealing to collectors of both early 20th century prints and classical figurative art.

The text in the images provides details about a limited-edition book, "Les Poésies de Méléagre" by Pierre Louÿs, published by the Société Nouvelle des Éditions d'Art Devambez in 1926.

The book is illustrated with fifteen original etchings by Édouard Chimot, printed in multiple states and in different paper formats. The edition was limited to 230 copies, including:

  • 15 copies on special ancient Japan paper with four states of the etchings and an original color drawing by the artist.
  • 50 copies on imperial Japan paper, containing three states of the etchings and an original sketch.
  • 135 copies on vellum Arches paper, containing two states of the etchings.
  • 30 additional non-commercial copies for the artist and his friends.
